gabe's guide to orlando date spots

intro

Man I fucking hate O-town. I fucking hate trying to date in O-town. This city fucking sucks.

But for my folks who have somehow managed to find love in this crapshoot of a city, I've put together a list of some of my favorite cute, fun, and lowkey spots for dates in Orlando.

Godspeed.

restaurants

breakfast/brunch

Baldwin Perk — 4.5/5 $$
A friends-themed restaurant in Baldwin Park. The food here is great, and it's a great spot for some healthy brunch. My favorite thing to get here is The Joey.

Chubby's Diner — 4.3/5 $
Family diner on Colonial by Dean road. The place is 50's Americana themed and is super cool if you're in to that kinda thing. Another really great after-party brunch spot. They close at 2pm daily.

Townhouse — 4.2/5 $
Family diner up in Oviedo. Good after-party brunch spot.

middle eastern/mediterranean

Cedar Halal Food and Grill — 4.5/5 $
My favorite restaurant in Orlando. A quaint little Lebanese restaurant/grocery store off Colonial by Alafaya, this place is the real deal. You can tell the food is real because every time you go it will taste different. Trust me, I've been going every week for the past four years. There's always jazz playing in the background, and the owner is one of the kindest and most genuine people I've ever met (and a really cool dude as well). It's right by Regal Waterford theaters, so it's a great before or after movie grub spot. Even if you're not going here on a date, I'd suggest you check it out.

Bosphorous — 4.7/5 $$
a Turkish restaurant in Winter Park. A little bit pricey, but you get very large portions. I would recommend getting the lavash as an appetizer and the Chicken Adana Kebap for a main course. It is an easy dish to split with a date.

Cappadocia — 4.3/5 $$
A Turkish spot off of Semoran. Not as good as Bosphorous, but still good.

Perea — 4.4/5 $$
An upscale family-owned spot in Maitland. All their recipes are family recipes, and the food there is super good. I had the chicken souvlaki, moussaka, and portokalopita. All amazing. A tad on the pricier side, but each dish can easily be split between two people.

asian

vietnamese

Ánh Hồng — 4.5/5 $
Another Viet spot off Mills and 50. Different owners, the food tastes different, but still really good. I prefer Pho 54/Vietnamese Cuisine for my day-to-day eatery, but the intereio of this place is super cool.

Pho 54 — 4.7/5 $
One of my favorite Viet spots, period. The beef phở and the grilled pork bún are two of the best I've had. The staff there is super nice too.

Vietnamese Cuisine — 4.5/5 $
A hole-in-the-wall off Mills and 50 run by the same people as Pho 54. The food tasts the same exact, I had to knock off two tenths of a point for ambience tho.

ramen

Domu — 5/5 $$
Specifically the one in Dr. Phillips, this is one of the best Ramen spots I've ever been to. Their tonkotsu is great. Their appetizers are superb.

Ramen Takagi — 4.8/5 $$
A cool and cute Ramen spot in Aloma. Depending on the night you go, it may be stupidly packed, but the food is well worth it. I recommend getting the black garlic tonkotsu.

sushi

Ootoya Sushi — 4.8/5 $$
Man, I didn't know sushi could taste so good. Before this, the only sushi I had had was sushi from all-you-can-eat places. After eating here my outlook has been severely changed, and my bar has been raised to heights unrecoverable.

hotpot/bbq

Gyu-Kaku — 5/5 $$
An absolutely incredible Japanese barbecue spot. It is a tad pricey, but it is honestly worth it for one of those special dates. I would recommend getting the garlic fried rice to go with whatever you're eating.

Izziban — 4.4/5 $$$
All-you-can-eat sushi and JBBQ. Food is good, but I honestly like Gyu-Kaku more. Izziban is great for large groups of people, so bring your date and some friends and order a beer tower.

other

Caravan — 4.9/5 $$
Uzbek restaurant. Super fucking good. I'd recommend the fried lagman and achichiq salad. You will not find food like this anywhere else. Good for if you are taking out someone adventurous.

Saffron Indian Cuisine — 4.5/5 $$
Good Indian spot in Dr. Phillips. Vegan, too.

latin american

Fogo de Chão — 5/5 $$$$
An all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse down by I-Drive. This will be a VERY filling date. Save it for something special.

Piefection — 4.7/5 $$
A brazilian pizza joint. Sounds like an odd combo — partially because it is. They've got TONS of interesting pizzas there. I recomend getting the corn catupiry and the greek pizzas.

american/other

BJ's — 4.3/5 $$
An Americana restaurant (chain?) in Oviedo. Good food, but their beer selection (massive) is a reason worth going.

Muzzarella Pizza and Italian Kitchen — 4.5/5 $$
Super good scratch-kitchen Italian food. They have calamari too!

Stasio's — 4.5/5 $$
The single best Italian sub I've ever had. I'd recommend getting the Stasio and the rosemary chips. The hours are weird and they're closed on Sundays, but if you can make it then it's worth it.

Sixty Vines — 4.5/5 $$
A high-scale contemporary Americana dinner spot in Winter Park. Great ambience for a date on the somewhat fancier end.

Ziggy's Pizza — 4.5/5 $$
An incrdible pizza place near downtown. A small shop with a bar (Thirsty Topher) connected to it, the owner is always here working and the food is always fire. I'd 100% recommend the Hot Honey Pizza

deserts

Amor em Pedaços Bakery — 4.5/5 $
Cute little Brazlian bakery near I-Drive.

Sodiê Doces — 4.7/5 $
Another cute little Brazlian bakery near I-Drive. They sell cakes by the gram. Apparently that's how they do it in Brazil.

Kōri — 4/5 $$
A Japanese desert spot on Mills and 50. Not the greatest I've had, and kinda overpriced for what it is.

coffee shops

Austin's Coffee — 5/5 $
Super cool and quaint coffee shop in Winter Park. The atmosphere is great the music rocks and every night they have some sort of special event going on. Wednesdays at 8pm are poetry nights and Thursdays at 10pm are live jazz nights. Regardless of if I'm on a date or not, I still go to jazz night every single Thursday. The food here is really good. I will usually get either a Cuban sandwich or I will get the pasta salad. The pasta salad is three dollars and the portion is huge.
Date or not, I still recommend coming.

Bynx — 4.2/5 $
Another Coffee shop in downtown Orlando. This place doubles as a record store as well as triples as a music venue. Check out the calendar that they have on display because quite literally one in every two or three days there is some event going on.

Drunken Monkey — 4/5 $
Another indie coffee shop this time in Milk District. All the food here is vegetarian and vegan, so if that's your thing, hey, go for it!

Mariam's Coffee — 4.2/5 $
A Middle Eastern coffee shop in the heart of downtown Orlando. This place is an interesting pick, mainly for their choice of drinks. You will find a lot of Arab and Middle Eastern coffees here. The owner and family are super nice and this has quickly become one of my favorite spots to go, not even as a date, but just in general.

Stardust — 4.5/5 $
THE go-to indie kid coffee shop. The vibe here is not like anything you will ever see anywhere else. This is my go to first date spot. It's chill, the music is great, and the ambience rocks. Depending on the day of the week you go, there's a very likely chance that you will run into a live music concert towards the night. Whenever someone wants to take a woman out for coffee and they ask me "hey Gabe, where should we go?" The first place I recommend is Stardust.

thrifting

Avalon Exchange — 4/5 $$
Cute and cool spot in Winter Park. Overrated imo.

Orange Tree Antiques Mall — 4.4/5 $$
A massive antique boutique off of S Orlando Ave. Tons of great finds and even more cool things to look at. You do have to put your bags in a locker in the front of the store, but other than that it's a great spot. Every woman I've taken here has adored it.

Zera Outlet — 4.2/5 $
The most lowkey thrift spot in the entirety of O-town. Shut the fuck up about this place and please don't blow it up. Absurdly cluttered, but tons of gems. The owner will give you free candy when you make a purchase.

The Goodwill on Sand Lake Road — 4.6/5 $
The biggest Goodwill in Orlando. Every date I've told about this place was skeptical about it, and every date I took here loved it afterwards. You can spend a lot of time here, and theres TONS of trinkets to oogle over.

Etoille Boutique — 4.5/5 $$$
Great ambience in here and really cool finds, but FUCK is everything expensive in here. It's a place to go inside, look, then leave.

The Owl's Attic — 4.5/5 $$$
Same as Etoille Boutique. Great ambience, but fucking expensive. It's a spot to look at things.

Out of the Closet — 4.2/5 $
A thrift store off Mills, the clothes here are hit-or-miss. They give free Plan B here. Take the free Plan B.

record stores

Park Ave CDs — 4.7/5 $
The classic indie-kid record shop. Right across the street from Stardust, Park Ave is a 20-30 min date spot.

Rock 'n' Roll Heaven — 5/5 $
An absolutely insane spot. They've been around for almost 50 years and have a collection to match. You can find fucking anything here. Theres tons of cool little sections to puruse with your shawty, and if you manage to come on a day that Fred is working that man will unleash some of the wildest personal and musical stories you've ever heard. I definitely recommend this place.

drinks

Spatz — 3.8/5 ¢
A shitty dive bar by Austin's Coffee. Cheap beer, $1 pool tables, and a definitely interesting vibe. It's honestly super fun on a date or with friends, and ESPECIALLY with both at the same time. Get drunk, shoot pool, and abuse their touch tunes.
They have food, I would 100% recommend getting their lemon pepper wings, extra crispy.

Sportstown — 4.4/5 $
A bar in Milk District. They've got pool, arcade, pinball, hoops, and tons of good beer.

Will's Pub — 4.3/5 $
An Orlando classic. Will's Pub is a bar on Mills and is a staple in the local music scene. If you wanna take your date on something interesting, go to Will's Pub's website find a concert that seems like they might like, and get some tickets to go to that show. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will be the shows with the biggest crowd turnouts.

breweries/craft beers

Hourglass Brewery — 4.2/5 $
A brewery with two locations — one in Milk District, and one in Altamonte. I've only been to the one in milk District, but man this place is cool. They are a local craft brewery with tons of cool and interesting beers for you and your date to try.

The Thirsty Topher — 4.2/5 $
The bar attached to Ziggy's pizza. Tons of cool craft brews here.

clubs

Cocktails & Screams — 3/5 $$
Overpriced craft drinks. Cool ambience. Try to get in to the sneakeasy there. The drinks are a tad pricey there, but fuck they're good. Only worth it for the speakeasy.

Manekins — 1/5 $
Do not go here. This place fucking SUCKS. "Oooh a cool goth bar!" No. The vibe is rancid, the drinks overpriced, and the owner is allegedly an absolute fucking creep allegedly with a secret sex room where he allegedly takes the under-21 patrons.
I drank about three litres of alcohol on a bar crawl in Sanford, I step in to Manekins and I immediately stone cold fucking sober. DO NOT GO HERE!!

irish pubs

Claddagh's — 4.4/5 $
My go-to Irish pub, which is right across the street from the Hourglass Brewery in Milk District. This pub is a very unique spot as it is owned by a group of local musicians who specialize in traditional Irish music who loved to play there. This place is run out of pure love for the Irish pub, and you are hard-pressed to find people as passionate about a place as this. They've got a really good selection of British and Irish beers here and I would definitely give this place a go.

Fiddler's Green (a.k.a. Fidds) — 4/5 $
Another Irish pub, this time in downtown Winter Park. Because of its proximity to Rollins College, you're going to get a lot of college-aged people here. They occasionally have live music.

other cool spots

parks

Baldwin Park — 4.5/5
Specifically Harbor Park, this is a huge and cool park I love to take people for a walk.

Harry P. Leu Gardens — 4.5/5
I've actually never been here. I've been meaning to go for ages, but I've heard from my friends that this place is absolutely incredible. They claim it as one of the most beautiful gardens they've ever been to.

Bok Towers — 4.5/5
a bit far out of Orlando buck Towers is a massive garden/art installation? I really don't know how to describe this place, you kind of just need to look up pictures. Very beautiful. I recommend this place.

Carl T. Langford Park — 4.6/5
A out in Milk District. Largeish, tons of walking and some cool gazebos.

Dickson Azalea Park — 4.6/5
Right across the street from Carl T. Langford. Goes kinda underground/under street level. Cool scenery, creeks, and slight urbex vibes.

shopping

Costco Business Center — 3.9/5
Did you know that are more than 10,000 cities in the entire world? How about of that 10,000, there are only 34 cities with a special mega-Costco? Did you know that Orlando is home to one of these mega-Costcos?
The Costco Business Center is a Costco for, well, businesses. Want cases of Monster, 20 gal jugs of gucacmole, 15 lb tubes of ground beef, whole pigs, or massive jars of candy? The Costco Business Center has it all. You and your date will likely buy one or none of the items here, but it is truly a unique experience. This fucking Costco is like no other.

miscellaneous

Enzian Theatre — 4.5/5 $
A locally run theater here in Orlando. They show a lot of cool and interesting movies. Watch out for their Freaky Friday movie showings that they do, where they play a random lowkey cult-classic on some random Fridays.

Church of Scientology Orlando
Yessir we have a Church of Scientology here in O-town. I've always wanted to take a date here, ask for a tour, and see how long we last.

activities

date gauntlets

Now you've got some spots — here I've put together some combos that have worked well for me.
I pray that the women I've taken on dates don't see this section and realize I've taken nearly every other women on the same dates.

the indie kid

Start at Stardust for some coffee 5 or 6pm coffee. Drink and talk for a while, then cross the street to Park Ave CDs. Spend some time there. Ask if she's hungry and when she says yes, say you know a good Viet spot and take her to Ánh Hồng or Vietnamese Cuisine. If she doesn't like Viet, Domu in East End Market is a 5 minute walk down the street. It's not as good as the flagship Domu, and make sure you tell her that so you can secure the Dr. Phillips spot as another date.

a night out at the (winter) park

Go to Bosphorous for food, then walk up and down Park Ave. There's tons of cool little spots there to peep in and explore. Once done, head south towards Rollins. Once on the campus, head southeast towards the lake. There will be stairs and a pool on your way down. Stay by the lake for a bit, chat, hold each other, be cutesy. Once you're done, you can take her home, see what's going on at Austin's that night, or head to Ravernous Pig or Fiddler's Green for some drinks.

jazz night

Go to Austin's at 10pm on a thursday for jazz night. At some point, dip and head to Spatz a few hundred feet down the road for some beer and pool.
